Section 20, the OST

Post by Dakarne »

Take A Bow
Song by Muse

Corrupt
You corrupt
And bring corruption to all that you touch

Hold
You'll behold
And beholden for all that you've done

Spell
Cast a spell
Cast a spell on the country you run

And risk
You will risk
You will risk all their lives and their souls

And burn
You will burn
You will burn in hell
Yeah, you'll burn in hell
You'll burn in hell
You'll burn in hell for your sins

Oh, our freedom's consuming itself
What we've become
Is contrary to what we want
Take a bow

Death
You bring death
And destruction to all that you touch

Pay
You must pay
You must pay for your crimes against the earth

Hex
Feed the hex
Feed the hex on the country you love

And beg
You will beg
You will beg for their lives and their souls

Yeah, and burn
You will burn
You will burn in hell
Yeah, you'll burn in hell
You'll burn in hell
Yeah, you'll burn in hell
You'll burn in hell
Yeah you'll burn in hell for your sins

Well, this bit is new. This is where I, unlike the previous thread, give a bit of a justification for the inclusion of the song. Aside from this song having been featured in the Watchmen trailers, which is one of the places where I first encountered it, it's just fitting for the overall story-arc. I'm not telling you the specifics of where, why, how, who, when, etc. because that would be counted as spoilers. I can promise more active justification in the next post.

'For the moment, mortal, they find the thought of killing me more desirable than that of killing you.'
'And what are their chances?'
'The answer to that is evident in how long they've been hesitating, wouldn't you think, mortal?'

Nemo
Song by Nightwish

This is me for forever
One of the lost ones
The one without a name
Without an honest heart as compass

This is me for forever
One without a name
These lines the last endeavor
To find the missing lifeline

Oh how I wish
For soothing rain
All I wish is to dream again
My loving heart
Lost in the dark
For hope I'd give my everything

My flower
Withered between
The pages two and three
The once and forever bloom gone with my sins

Walk the dark path
Sleep with angels
Call the past for help
Touch me with your love
And reveal to me my true name

Oh how I wish
For soothing rain
All I wish is to dream again
My loving heart
Lost in the dark
For hope I'd give my everything

Oh how I wish
For soothing rain
Oh how I wish to dream again
Once and for all
And all for once
Nemo my name for evermore

Nemo sailing home
Nemo letting go

Oh how I wish
For soothing rain
All I wish is to dream again
My loving heart
Lost in the dark
For hope I'd give my everything

Oh how I wish
For soothing rain
Oh how I wish to dream again
Once and for all
And all for once
Nemo my name for evermore

Nemo my name for evermore

Okie-dokie. Justification for this one? Well, it's quite obvious when you get down to it. The over-arching theme of hopelessness tends to fit in quite well with the whole theme of 'superheroes, just taken seriously'. It's not a very cheerful moment song, but I could imagine it being one of the Darker Moments songs. I don't intend to go all Watchmen about everything, but there will be moments where everything seems dark, miserable and hopeless. The heroes do have to actually overcome something, you know. Things have to look their utter worst before the hero suddenly snaps and displays that they're not giving up even if the world ends. It very well might. But that's not going to slow them down; it's just one more problem to solve.

The other thing that makes this song fitting is the actual title, and the lines at the beginning; The one without a name/Without an honest heart as compass - this is quite fitting. Particularly the latter line. Superheroes are often plagued by themes of identity. Which is the mask? Does Superman dress up as Clark Kent or does Clark Kent dress up as Superman? Does Batman dress up as Bruce Wayne or does Bruce Wayne simply dress up as Batman?

Our Solemn Hour
Song by Within Temptation

Sanctus Espiritus! redeem us from our solemn hour
Sanctus Espiritus! insanity is all around us
("I speak to you for the first time as Prime Minister in a solemn hour for the life of our country")

Sanctus Espiritus!
Sanctus Espiritus!
Sanctus Espiritus!

In my darkest hours
I could not foresee
That the tide could turn so fast to this degree
Can't believe my eyes
How can you be so blind?
Is the heart of stone, no empathy inside?

Time keeps on slipping away and we haven't learned
So in the end now what have we gained?

Sanctus Espiritus! redeem us from our solemn hour
Sanctus Espiritus! insanity is all around us
Sanctus Espiritus! is this what we deserve?
Can we break free from chains of never-ending agony?

Are they themselves to blame
The misery, the pain?
Didn't we let go?
Allowed it,let it grow
If we can't restrain
The beast which dwells inside
It will find it`s way somehow, somewhere in time

Will we remember all of the suffering
`Cause if we fail it will be in vain

Sanctus Espiritus, redeem us from our solemn hour
Sanctus Espiritus, insanity is all around us
Sanctus Espiritus, is this what we deserve?
Can we break free from chains of never-ending agony?

Sanctus Espiritus!
Sanctus Espiritus!
(" A tremendous battle is raging in France and Flanders. The Germans, by a remarkable combination of air bombing and heavily armoured tanks, have broken through the French defences north of the Maginot Line, and strong columns of their armoured vehicles are ravaging the open country, which for the first day or two was without defenders...")

Sanctus Espiritus! redeem us from our solemn hour
Sanctus Espiritus! insanity is all around us
Sanctus Espiritus! is this what we deserve?
Can we break free from chains of never-ending agony? (ending agony!)

Sanctus Espiritus! redeem us from our solemn hour (solemn hour!)
Sanctus Espiritus! insanity is all around us (all around us!)
Sanctus Espiritus! is this what we deserve?
Can we break free from chains of never-ending agony?

Notes
I have several major reasons for including this song. The first and most pressingly obvious is that the song is fucking epic. Seriously. Latin chanting symphonic metal that features recorded Churchill quotes in the background. You can't be more epic than this song unless you're Nightwish's The Poet and the Pendulum, and that one's technically cheating. The second reason is that it actually fits the background of the whole setting. The titular organisation was born in fire, bloodshed, brutality and one of the largest wars that this planet has ever seen. The presence of metahumans just make it bigger. And it's the same war featured in this song, in fact. The Second World War is a big theme for Section 20 as an organisation, if only because that's how it all started; a group of people with extraordinary abilities selected by the British government to fight the rising threat of the only major polity in living memory that has been so unequivocally evil that the leader's name is considered an insult.

In a sense, that's one of the fun things about the setting. In the solemn hour that began it, there was evil, and good rose up to kick its arse... and it had a fucking epic soundtrack whilst doing so.

All right, then, a two-song special.

THE HELL MARCH!

And

The Hymn of the Soviet Union
Rock version

Soyuz nerushimy respublik svobodnykh
Splotila naveki velikaya Rus'!
Da zdravstvuyet sozdanny voley narodov
Yediny, moguchy Sovetsky Soyuz!

Slavsya, Otechestvo nashe svobodnoye,
Druzhby narodov nadyozhny oplot!
Partiya Lenina sila narodnaya
Nas k torzhestvu kommunizma vedyot!

Skvoz' grozy siyalo nam solntse svobody
I Lenin veliky nam put' ozaril
Na pravoye delo on podnyal narody,
Na trud i na podvigi nas vdokhnovil!

Slavsya, Otechestvo nashe svobodnoye,
Druzhby narodov nadyozhny oplot!

Slavsya, Otechestvo nashe svobodnoye,
Druzhby narodov nadyozhny oplot!
Partiya Lenina sila narodnaya
Nas k torzhestvu kommunizma vedyot!

Notes
Justification? The Red Guard needed a song, so I gave them two.
