'Cause of a thread at A Certain Place on A Certain Board I'm now sorely tempted to introduce some kind of Super Kirov: a Soviet battleship for a new century, launched in 2016 or thereabouts, fitted with laser cannons, SICKLE uplinks, maybe a few strategic missile launch tubes, rocket-boosted cannons with 100+km range and a pack of quad lift fan stealth transports to transport Naval Infantry ashore to accept the enemy's surrender after he's been pounded down by Soviet firepower for a few hours.

Invincible to direct torpedo hits! A sustained nuclear cruise speed of 30 knots! With enough missiles to deter an American carrier battle group!

I heartily approve of this madness, if only to see the triumphant return of the battleship.

I can imagine everyone is basically 'oh shit' at the idea of such a thing even being in the same hemisphere as them. "Baylor, the Super Kirov is near Madagascar!" "But we're in Sydney!" "I know, right, we knew to get out!"

How's about...

Arkhangelsk

Launched in 2016 Arkhangelsk is a one-of-a-kind Soviet warship, simultaneously a prestige project and a test case for a potential new class of 21st century Soviet battleships. It is the single largest warship ever to ply the oceans: with a full load of 130,000 tons it displaces five times as much as a Kirov guided missile cruiser, twice as much as the Japanese battleship Yamato, and is in fact superceeded in size only by the very largest of container ships.

Arkhangelsk is powered by twin 220 MW nuclear reactors which provide power to everything from the electric propulsion to the weapons. Primary weapons include a whopping 400 vertical launch missiles plus an additional 300 point defense SAMs, ten anti-missile lasers, two 10 MW 'death ray' laser cannons, a single 9A52-4 Tornado MLRS system, and four 18" rocket-boosted cannons in two casemates. This obscene amount of firepower, combined with the very latest in Soviet radar and data-link technology, allows the ship to deter an entire NATO carrier-battlegroup or level a small country single-handedly. The ship further carries six Ka-35 'Helix D' helicopters, four Yak-212 quad lift fan stealth transports for commando insertion missions, and a full battalion of Naval Infantry plus their gear and landing craft in two aft well decks.

This gigantic warship is commanded by RADM Veronika Kravec, a pale and slightly otherworldly Ukrainian whose career is notable particularly for having remained staunchly loyal to Field Marshal Iosef Sechalin for the entire duration of the Civil War. It is unclear to western intelligence agencies why she survived in a command position after the anti-Militant purges, let alone why she'd be promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in charge of one of the USSR's single most formidable weapons platforms.

In addition the Arkhangelsk is rumored to function as a testbed for an experimental Soviet sonar-disrupting device. Certainly it is true that NATO hunter-killer submarines shadowing the massive battleship frequently encounter unusual electronic interference that makes it very difficult to properly track the Arkhangelsk.

That's not a battleship. That's a floating fortress.

It's actually less ridiculous than the OGW. :P

But man, if the OGW uses two PAVE PAWS as radars, a truly ludicrous Soviet equivalent would probably have a STEEL YARD built on it. :)

Holy fuck. Semi-bright Soviet anti-ship missiles. SICKLE-linked. :o

Or rather the Don-2N ABM radar.

It should have some kind of bleeding edge LIDAR array that, when focused ridiculously high, can cook things like those radars.

And some kind of super-cavitating ASROC.

That last one is now my new desktop background.

Alright, so here's a new idea. Just throwing something at the wall here after reading a blurb on SPECTRE and its organization in the Bond novels. Let's see if we can draw up an organizational chart thingie for WRAITH.

The way this works is twofold. You can either just throw awesome names up here to fill in the blanks (like I've done with a few suggestions), you could add a brief background blurb for a name (who they are, what they do, why they got in bed with WRAITH to begin with, etc.) or if you're a totally kickin' rad kind of guy (or gal) you could do both.

1. Malcolm Stavro Kroner
2. Chandra Gosely
3.
4.
5.
6. Mira Kandinsky
7.
8. Comte Le Feuvre
9. Peregrine Ellington-Jones
10. Colonel Uchida Masatake
11. Thao Soeur
12. Freya Korovin
13.
14. Haris Maslennikov
15.
16.
17.
18.
19.
20.
21.

I'm using 21 because SPECTRE had 21 members. And remember, these people can be anything: African warlords, Saudi princes, arms traders, Italian mafiosi, information brokers, rogue STASI officers, yakuza, terrorist leaders, South American drug barons, Wall Street executives, pirate captains, even digital expert programs for all I know. Just let your imagination run wild: if you were a worldwide terror organization involved in selling dubious services to the highest bidder and fostering mayhem and worldwide instability, what kind of people would you recruit?

Look Guys! I am being topical! Ironic! Satirical even

Robert Conan Blackwell

Once a multi-media giant with television channels and newspaper spreading his opinion across the globes, Robert Conan Blackwell dictated the will of the masses with his tabloid. At his height he was regarded as the kingmaker of governments, to be courted and flattered. But all good things come to an end. At first the ethic scandal seemed minor and likely to blow over. At worst it was going to cause the loss of a single paper among dozen but it snowballed and grew until the entire corporate empire fractured and splintered under the strain.

Left without a method of influence, Blackwell fell from grace but still craved the kind of power he once had and was recruited into WRAITH to attempt to wield it once more in their interest. An expert at propoganda and information, Blackwell is low down in the WRAITH hierarchic but ambitious, though as he is not an young man, lacks patience in his attempts to gain promotion while he still has some vigour left to him.

Hmm...*Cracks open file of badass names*

Most of them are probably a bit too cheesy, but how about Brandon Gambit? Sir Brandon Gambit, even.

Lose the 'von' and it's a match (sticking it in the 'rogue STASI' box for now). And I like Sir Brandon Gambit quite a bit. But I don't want WRAITH to end up all European/American: there's got to be a fair heap of interesting South American/African/Middle Eastern/Asian names out there that would fit with this crew. C'mon, we've a Chaos Farley here: what would be the Chinese equivalent to something like that?

Nice one. This is what I have so far:

WRAITH

1. Malcolm Stavro Kroner (SWE)
2. Chandra Gosely (USA)
3. Lucien Uriel Vargas (COL)
4. Anton Stahl (DDR)
5. Zengo Loran (KUR)
6. Mira Kandinsky (RUS)
7. Daiyu Xifeng (CHI)
8. Comte Le Feuvre (FRA)
9. Peregrine Ellington-Jones (GB)
10. Col. Uchida Masatake (JAP)
11. Thao Soeur (THA)
12. Freya Korovin (UKR)
13. Enoch Razaq (???)
14. Haris Maslennikov (YUG)
15. Robert Conan Blackwell (AUS)
16. Guleed Abukar Gheeddi (SOM)
17. Dr. Maximilian Kafka (???)

I'm quite pleased with most of them, though several still need a little more 'Bond-ing' before they qualify as proper supervillain names. Suggestions as to what they do and what makes them so uniquely qualified to be amongst the top brass of the world's most infamous group of terrorists-for-hire are, as ever, welcome!
