RAZZARD: "Let me understand this. There's fifty klicks and justabouts a million god-damn mines between us an' the line, it's night, the radio doesn't work, and we might be about to bring five brigades of death-dealing, blood-crazed fanatics down on our necks. Is that what's happening?"

TEAGUE: "God-damn, Razzard. Stop whining like a 40 mike-mike and get your kill-face on."

Oh yeah. Can we get a bigger version of that picture, by any chance?

Keith David and Fassbender were freehanded, the rest are from memory. Since Butch and John are more or less the same physically, I drew both SERIOUS MODE and obnoxious Hawaiian-shirt BAYLOR MODE to represent the twins.

What do you guys think would make a believable-ish date for the first manned landing on Mars in this universe?

Well, this is CSW, after all; I would imagine that they are significantly ahead of us with space exploration. That being said, something like mid-late 2020s? Anything earlier is pushing it, unless the '60s CSW is filled with Orion spacecraft and moon bases...

Depends if you think the space race continued after they reached the moon. I mean did they see mars as the next target in the race. OR did they both forget about it and concentrate on dominance of earth orbit instead with MIR and Freedom and kilsats galore being what the competition was about?

It makes sense for most of the initial flurry of activity to be focused on near-Earth and the Moon; there definitely were moon bases for at the very least the USA, the USSR and the Europeans. I guess that and the cost of all the ridiculous defense programs kept them from shooting for Mars for a good while? Plus, I'm far from an expert, but I'm guessing a mission to Mars involves more than just building a big-ass rocket and firing it at the red planet. Shouldn't it take, like, months to get there?

I dunno, i'm thinking building a big ass enough rocket is like a good portion of it. Assuming by rocket you mean the propulsion and the habitat module to keep the crew alive. For however many months/years you'll be away.

There's also orbital mechanics to consider. Sometimes your trip is going to be a lot shorter than others because of different orbital velocitys and stuff. I don't know what kind of period there is between optimal times for launching a mission but that would be a factor in a realistic date for a first man (or woman knowing Siege) on mars.

And one of the biggest problem's I'd think would be beagle like. Getting the module down to the surface with the people in it alive and even more so getting it up out of the gravity well again. Which I guess is a tadge stronger than the moons.

Would it be cool for the 2020s Mars Mission to be an international effort? Like, Soviets, Americans and Europeans all contribute, and the crew is multinational too. Predictably there's strife and tension as ideological opposites are forced to share a cramped space together for a year or longer... Add in hidden ulterior motives, and maybe when they arrive over Mars the SICKLE brain core that's been orbiting for the last decade has its own plans for the red planet?

The heroes of the piece could be not the captain or whatever military types aboard, but the psychologists attached to try and keep everyone sane through the journey!

I actually vaguely remember a Soviet Mars mission in CSW back on OZ, but times have changed. As Boots says, a Mars mission is going to rely a lot on orbital mechanics. A Hohmann transfer between Earth and Mars would take 8-9 months one way. Which is about how long MSL took to drop Curiosity off at Gale Crater, so it seems even relatively small probes rely on this kind of transfer orbit. Which is unsurprising given how 'cheap' Hohmann transfers are.

That's a long time, and on top of that the Synodic period - the 'launch window' for a transfer - rolls around once every 26 months.

How long does this transfer window last? By which I mean, let's say you use it to shoot for Mars and it takes you eight months to get there at optimal speed, and you're there for a week or two or maybe a month... Would it then take you much longer to get back to Earth because the planets have moved apart in the meantime, or is it not that quickly a process?

Man, for a scifi enthusiast my orbital mechanics is weak.

The synod is a thing that occurs on a single day. If you want to Hohmann to Mars, you basically have to leave as soon as you arrive unless you want to be stuck there for 26 months.

Having a bunch of folks forcibly holed up on Mars for over two years dealing with intrigue and ideology as they slowly unravel the Secrets of the Red Planet™ sounds pretty neat to me. But that makes the mission something like 3-4 years long total, which means they're gonna need a frickin' big rocket to carry all the gear needed to keep a couple dozen people alive all that time. Plus a deorbitable base, some rovers, a portable nuclear reactor or two, maybe some kind of aerial transports, a shuttle to get back into orbit every once in a while...

All that and I can easily see how it took until 2020 to get it all together.

I meant the flying thingie, but hey :D. Wesker... Maybe he's a cool dude in the games, but in the movie the actor just did a bad imitation of Agent Smith and failed horribly at it.
