CSW, being something of an open venture (it's easily the most widely participated verse that's not public, like Comix). As such, comments and ideas are always welcome, but I'd like to take this somewhat further (if TE is any example) by putting out an open call for character profiles for the verse. Be it a hardbitten Marine, shady arms dealer, suspiciously western terrorist, or magnifcent bastard politician, I believe CSW offers a different pulpish flavor than Comix. Should Siege or I like the idea, it's a very good chance (read: will) that the character could be incorporated into the canon, a future story, or even the next Shadow Tempest Black.

Militum implicated Vladimir Putin in the Russian cybernetics "business", and I heartily support this. In the Russian civil war, he might've not exactly played both sides against each other, but could've lent his support here and there and only cast his lot with Kiralova when circumstances became favorable. Perhaps he played a part in the creation of Natasha X. He is a technocrat and would, personally, favor the technocratic reformist Russians rather than the crazy Ultramilitants who are trying to fuck things up. He might even be one of those who see WRAITH's hand in the Ultramilitant's affairs (he IS, in real-life, a KGB officer) and might not like what he sees.

Maybe he is the head of the Soviet Transhumanism project. Imagine Vladimir Putin with some cybernetic implant on his forehead... like BRAINIAC!

He might even have a freakteam of plausibly-deniable Soviet cyborg ninjas.

Seriously. Imagine him brooding in the shadows, wearing a slick suit, and musing over the fate of Russia!

Hmmm...

Need to developed the idea a little bit better, but right now it occurs to me there hasn't been a whole lot of characters from Latin America, which is odd considering the Cold War's preoccupation with the region. I'm thinking a Cuban information broker, operating out of Havana, Miami, Rio de Janeiro, and Mexico City... sometimes, it seems to the intelligence agencies that try to keep up with her, in multiple cities at once.

This is because she is. Because "she" is, in actuality, several shes.

Coming soon - the Red Connies.

I may have an idea. It's a relatively serious one, but orphaned from any of my own stuff and i didn't really know where to place him. Before I venture it out, though, I'd have to ask:

What's the state of the Philippines in CSW? Government in general, socio-economic situation, American bases, and suchlike?

EDIT: Plus, y'know, after seeing Japan and the Vietnams in the old OZ CSW, I've always wanted to see most of East and Southeast Asia fleshed out.

I believe we're right in the middle of the Sino-Indian proxy wars raging throughout East and South East Asia. Outstanding!

Yes. Amerikaner naval and AF bases in Luzon, in Clarke and Subic, while the Chicoms fund groups like the NPA wherever, and Soviet submarines prowl all 'round looking for shit to ruin, and the Injuns try to pry us away from Amerikaner influence with their... whatever. Turbaned guys riding mopeds collecting money from everyone. Yeah. While Taiwan funds and supports the richass anti-communist Filipino-Chinese populace here!

I've been meaning to get into S.E. Asia, but since it's a region I know very little about in terms of geo-political make-up, I haven't managed to get much so far. Wouldn't want to make an ass out of myself, after all.

If there is one contribution to CSW that I am totally proud of, it is my creation of Colonel (admittedly it should be general, but Colonel Putin sounds so much better) Vladimir Putin.

On the subject of characters, well, there was my Spetsnaz team that appeared in The Devil to Pay. I should really write you guys up a sequel to their exploits just because of the nostalgia I'm starting to develop for them again.

Lt. Sunday Summers, Private Secretary to the Director Special Operations Executive SIS.

Formerly an officer of the Royal Navy, Lt. Summers' last posting in military service was at the office of the Commodore in Charge, Hong Kong, as liaison officer between 3 Commando Brigade and MI-6. It was in that position that she first ran into Jack Ridley, who after being appointed DSOE requested her as his secretary.

Although her position at the SOE is officially that of private secretary Lt. Summers has command authority as second-in-command of the unit. Due to her close working relationship with DSOE Lt. Summers is privy to more dirty secrets than almost anyone in Britain, and she is dedicated to keeping those secrets as much as to the defence of Britain safe.

Blonde and athletic, Lt. Summers looks more cute than beautiful, which has lead many to underestimate her -- frequently to their misery, because Sunday Summers is just as ruthless and pragmatic as her boss. Like him she spends less time in the office than she does in the field, and she habitually carries a SIG P226 side-arm and is proficient with that weapon.

Gabriel Gimbrair, freelance operator / NTET agent

Born on the grounds of the Woodstock concert on Saturday August 16, 1969, in the middle of the Jefferson Airplane concert, it was probably destined that Gabriel Gimbrair would be no usual man. His parents were San Francisco hippies who raised him on a diet of free-spiritedness, lack of concern for materialist pursuits, and a near total disregard (not to mention distrust) of authority. This was not the kind of household very likely to spawn what in the 1970s would be considered a model citizen, and not unsurprisingly Mr. Gimbrair wasn't.

Gabriel Gimbrair flunked out of High School at age 16 and started roaming, spending at least five years "off the grid", living from day to day with a wide variety of people of seedy repute. He resurfaced in New Orleans in 1991 as a part-time stage magician, part-time conman mainly in the business of cheating tourists out of their money, then after building his reputation in '95 moved to Las Vegas to try his luck in the big-time of both show business and hustling.

That was when his career of entertainment and low-life conmanship went quite off the rails, for it was in Las Vegas that he inadvertedly wound up picking the pockets of what turned out to be a CIA agent turned East German mole, landing him in the middle of a deadly web of espionage and counter-espionage. Narrowly coming out ahead with both his life and a million dollars 'liberated' from a CIA safehouse on the Strip, Gimbrair shortly thereafter found himself a semi-unwilling recruit in the swelling ranks of NTET, the rogue worldwide intelligence agency run by the elusive Samantha Savage.

Gimbrair is a stage magician and a conman, quick with his wits and his fingers, a master of social engineering and human psychology through a long and seedy career of pulling the wool over people's eyes in schemes on both sides of the law. He is tall, handsome and charming, with an ego the size of the moon. No good with guns or violence of any kind, Gimbrair relies on a different type of coin to accomplish the tasks he is recruited for: famous for being able to hustle his way into any establishment and con nearly anyone into giving him what he wants of their own volition -- as well as being able to simply steal that which he can't get for free...

STRIKE TEAM AKULA

Renowned throughout USSR as the heroes of Chulyshman Canyon, Strike Team Akula was a crack cyborg unit that went rogue in 2012. Though famed throughout the land for their part in retaking a SICKLE AI bunker from the hands of Separatists near single-handedly, their subsequent AWOL with nearly two billion dollars in cocaine in Afghanistan put the Kremlin in an embarrassing position of having their glorified heroes choose money over motherland.

Today, Strike Team Akula operates largely underground as an elite force-for-hire operation, careful to stay one step ahead of their KGB opponents. The team is noted for the contrast between its lax and near vitriolic demeanor and complete profressionalism on and off the job. Operating out of a pair of surplus Hind choppers, the team largely stays on the move, taking jobs where they can. The obvious question posed to case officers who brave the high turnover rate of the position at the KGB is exactly why the disgruntled group of throwaway cyborg test subjects didn’t just settle down comfortably with several lifetime’s worth of income. In truth, Akula finds far more meaning dictating their own fates, taking missions of their choosing, using their gifts for their own gain as opposed to someone elses.

Akula first crossed paths with a MIDNIGHT strike team led by Lieutenant Jacen Ramirez in 2012 deep in the jungles of Africa, both had been hired by competing interests to recover a lost artifact related to a conspiracy involving the mysterious monoliths. There the teams were beset by a psychotic African warlord and his team of cyborg gorillas and forced to fight together for their survival, with their battle culminating against a stolen mass-produced SHADOW TEMPEST in a not-so-dormant volcano. By the end of the conflict the totem was destroyed, freeing the control over the gorillas, who swamped by warlord in his crippled war machine. Akula and the MIDNIGHT team departed on peaceable terms.

Akula resurfaced in Eastern Russia in 2015, under the hire of the separatist remnant faction that was responsible for the Ghost Walker Crisis of that fall. Their paths crossed yet again with a more matured Captain Ramirez, who by now was working as a mole in MIDNIGHT for the President and under orders to investigate Separatist ties with SOLIDSIX members once thought dead. Though solo, outgunned, and caught in an increasingly violent web of conspiracies, Ramirez managed to nonlethally down Akula one-by-one in the cooling forests. Appealing to their past alliance and the fact that the Separatist leader was planning to launch a stolen nuclear missile from a Ghost Walker platform, Ramirez convinced Akula to join forces with him one last time.

In the aftermath of the operation, Ramirez’s allies managed to convince Kiralova to pardon Akula, who by now was ready retire from their ill-gotten adventures. Currently the team has gone its separate ways, living their lives in far less violent settings, raising families and unloading their vast cash reserves to various charities.

MEMBERS

Great White: A prototype of the an experiment to replicate Combat Model I – Comrade Hammer – in a fully wearable armor akin to the American INTEGRAL TEMPEST, Great White was permanently bonded to his suit as tests increasingly went awry. His project shut down as a dead-end and financial black hole, Great White was reassigned to Siberia where he first formed ST Akula. Though his name brings to mind a ferocious, and gigantic predator, the massive cyborg is legendarily laid back and hands-off. Though his speech is characteristically slow and plodding, he possesses one of the most formidable tactical minds in the Eastern hemisphere and as such is able to lead Akula with ease through the most lethal of gauntlets unscratched. As much a father to his men as a comrade in arms, his men’s unflinching loyalty should speak for itself. After 2016, he had his combat gear –once thought forever grafted to his skin – removed and settled down as a moose farmer in Kostroma Oblast.

Hammerhead: Once considered the Soviet analogue to Mary MacTaggert, Feofan Titov was endowed with the fasted hand in the east and his cybernetics only made him swifter. His reflexes on the bleeding edge, Titov once boasted his could shoot the wings off a fly – before going ahead and de-winging half a swarm. Unfortunately, his tendency vivacious personality and tendency to sleep around caught up him when the Education Minister found Titov in bed with the minster’s wife. Banished to the ass-end of nowhere, his reputation forever sullied, the gunslinger fell under the wing of Great White in the chaos leading up the Second Soviet Civil War, and forever owes his debt to the titan when his CO punched a tank aside a tank that was intent on running Titov over. The heart of Strike Team Akula, Hammerhead is usually the one to take point, for his eyes are some of the sharpest in the world. Blinded in one eye in the aftermath of the Ghost Walker crisis, Titov now uses his once-famed reflexes to use as one of the most entertaining chefs in Omsk, slicing a dozen fish in the span of a second or two.

Mako: The only female member of the team, Aimée Aglaé defected from WEU a year after her fledgling psionic gifts went active. Fleeing in hiding in Siberia rather than let herself – or more accurately, her incredible skills at psychokinesis – be drafted into service, only to find herself engulfed in the Soviet war. Initially protecting civilians from a Separatist tank column moving to reinforce the rebel-held SICKLE bunker and found the most expeditious route as being through Mako’s town, she found herself fighting alongside what was soon to become Akula. With her help, the team hijacked the tanks and used them to storm the canyon in the fabled Chulyshman Run. It was Mako’s suggestion to go rogue with the cocaine as funding when she found herself dissatisfied with her new, unwanted allegiances to Russia and her deployment to Afghanistan. Her telepathic powers gave Akula the edge in evading authorities for close to four years, and when she finally “settled” down it was in a traveling psychic/magician show with the similarly retired Gabriel Gimbrair, playing mostly at children’s hospitals in South America.

Bull: Despite his vicious name, Feliks Egorov is truly a gentle giant, just taller than that bulky robotic form of Great White. An experiment in optimizing pilot efficiency with cybernetics, Egorov was one of the alpha model participants, and only one of a dozen who went through the surgery before the program was shut down in the wake of advancing UCAV AI technology. Possessed of a savant-level of skill in piloting even before half-finished surgery, Bull can fly nearly anything, but is generally weak with any social interaction – a quality that left him as the butt of most jokes and eventually transferred to Siberia as a Hind pilot. Great White, at the point, saw the potential in the young and colossal man instantly, and did what he always did – he took Feliks under his wing. Bull was Great White’s most loyal friend from then on, staying with the team through the Chulyshman Run to the volcanic showdown in Africa to transformative finale in southeastern Russia. He currently makes a living as one of the most respected medevac pilots in Moscow.

Barracuda: If his name didn’t give it away, Barracuda – Kir Dorogoi – didn’t exactly belong in Akula. At least, not in the most literal sense. Though one of the most valuble members of the team and second in vive only to Titov, he was also a KGB plant from the very beginning, manipulating the organization of the team and keeping tabs on it, reporting secretly to Moscow. He was perhaps the reason why the KGB just always came this close to catching Akula but never seemed to succeed. Loyal to both the Kremlin – and more accurately, Kiralova – and Great White, Barracuda was an A-MF model infiltration cyborg, no accident, an experiment in using light-bending technology to replicate bulky and extremely short-lasting individual camouflage technology that was moderately successful. Serving as the advance scout and sniper for the team, Dorogoi always filled the role of the team’s conscience, balancing out Hammerhead’s flighty, jumpy go-do-it personality and Mako’s fierce, if violent get-it-down-now independence. He was the one who pulled the strings in the final days of Akula, manipulating Ramirez into capturing them and offering their assistance against the Separatist Commander. It also, obviously, was his hand that was behind Akula’s pardoning by Kiralova. Though his team bears him no ill-will over his long double allegiance, today he maintains little contact with his former comrades as the current director of field operations in the Chief Directorate 18.

This is just something I rapidly threw together. I think it's a kind of neat social idea but a) I'm kind of hazy on fairly important social matters in CSW so it may not necessarily fit and b) I'm not sure what sort of utility it would have for a pulp fiction Cold War spyhard universe. :)

Sedition and Contents Under Pressure

Eddie Adams once said that there isn't a weapon in the world like a still photograph. Steve McCurry's Afghan Girl. Malcolm Browne's Burning Monk. Kevin Carter's heartrending image of a Sudanese child, more bones than flesh. Margaret Bourke-White's hard-won image of Gandhi at the spinning wheel. Jeff Widener's capture of the Tank Man. These are images that have gripped the imagination of the international community. A photograph can change the world.

Emily Elsworth's 2005 Pullitzer Prize winning photo 'Sedition - Contents Under Pressure' changed the world. Elsworth's photo of a fourteen year old year, her grin full of blood, being manhandled by a pair of Secret Service gorillas made the front page of almost every newspaper in the world. She wasn't even five feet tall and she'd impossible tagged her name - Sedition - across the front of the White House. It wasn't there for long, but that image of spray paint on the home of the President of the United States captured the hearts and minds of disgruntled youths all over the world. Sedition made her protest in paint and got away with it too: the court cases surrounding the issue were total debacles. Mishandling of the event on the part of the US government, the circulation of Elsworth's photo in the media, discussion on Facebook and other Internet venues, it all added up to a new face in the urban guerrilla movement. She wasn't exactly the new Che, but it wasn't long before people were latching onto Sedition as symbol of a new wave of social discontent. At some point, after that Sedition (or so it is assumed) threw up a new piece on the Washington Monument that took the 'Contents Under Pressure' from the title of Elsworth's photo, and it took on a life of its own.

Ten years on and Contents Under Pressure is part social movement and part underground brand. It's not right to say it's an organisation, but all over the world people with that same spark of rebellion have used the Contents Under Pressure brand to express their issues with wider society. Through the Internet and new media, a loose network of like-minded youth has sprung up and Contents Under Pressure has become a banner for any number of protest groups. While Sedition herself has always denied any sort of real ownership of Content Under Pressure, there is no denying that the wider network sees her as their leader: there is often a concerted effort to make any graffiti-based protest big enough so that Sedition herself might become personally involved. Not having stopped at the White House, Sedition's propensity for massive tags in dangerous places has gained her an almost legendary status purely for her skill. Her Twitter feed is the most widely followed in the world; her books and blogposts have massive audiences. Other skilled, veteran writers have since joined her cause ... though critics will often claim, not unfairly, that sometimes it doesn't seem like there's much of a cause there at all. But for Sedition, and for Contents Under Pressure generally, that free expression of rebellion is cause enough.

That's the thing, Moby, she isn't protesting against anything, at least anything society would consider meaningful. More likely than not, Contents Under Pressure and Sedition are probably broadly protesting social norms and conformity. Note I said broadly; chances are that each group could spin it in their own direction depending on the local situation.

I have to admit that I'm not totally clear what the White House tag was protesting. I mean, if it was the real Cold War then it would probably be directed at McCarthyism or the Vietnam War, but the timing is wrong and I can't really remember if there's anything comparable in the public eye in 21st century CSW America. They're up to lots of shady stuff, sure, but it's not like some teenager would know about that.

I mean, what caught me up was that it was in '05, but 9/11 hit the USSR instead of the States, so most of the protest-worthy stuff wouldn't have happened in America - and Siege hasn't really said what Moscow's reaction to the attack was. I mean, any dickeries that spawned from America in my timeline wouldn't be public knowledge until past 2010 or so, so I got caught up for a second.

But it honestly doesn't matter - it's all there for flavor anyway.

It actually does seem like something that would stick in with the more cyberpunky-Soviets of the 21st century. But her cause being hijacked seems to be half her deal.

God, cyberpunk is so much cooler with it's communist. Though I figure any hacker would probably be humored by SICKLE if her attention actually focused on the netrunner.

Lucien Uriel Vargas

Notorious drug baron, leader of the La Estacado Cartel and commander of a private army called 'Los Tiburones'. Wanted on suspicion of murder, drug trafficking, extortion, arms trafficking, money laundering, contract killing and narcoterrorism even before he joined the seedy ranks of WRAITH, Vargas proved one of Kroner's most tenacious lieutenants, a man with command of unfathomable riches, a nigh-unparalleled survival instinct, and a complete lack of any scruples.

Vargas is headquartered somewhere in the Colombia-Peru-Brazil triborder area, a notorious hotbed of terrorism, narco-trafficking and other illegal activity. From the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties he had a complete stranglehold on the area through a combination of bribery and intimidation: his private army at one point was said to number over 5,000 foot soldiers and incorporated helicopter gunships and aircraft. His influence took a heavy hit when the Colombian government with the help of the United States cleaned out the region, but Vargas and large numbers of his forces escaped prosecution by fleeing to Brazil, where Los Tiburones reformed in 1998.

With the help of WRAITH Vargas in the late-nineties and first decade of the 20th century pioneered many novel cartel strategies, such as smuggling drugs into the USA by means of mini-subs. Despite multiple attempts to root him out by enemies as varied as rival cartels, the Brazilian and Colombian governments or the CIA, Los Tiburones at their height in 2010 were said to bring in more than $60 million per day. The total amount of money made by the cartel was in the tens of billions, and very possibly the hundreds of billions of dollars.

This vast amount of money made Vargas into one of the principal bankrollers of Kroner's operations, and it also made Vargas into one of the most wanted men on the planet. It was not however until after the fracturing of WRAITH in the wake of Kroner's death that it was discovered that Vargas was not fully in control of the organization's cash flow, and that Los Tiburones indeed had very little to say about where the money went. This spurred intelligence organizations worldwide to speculate that Malcolm Kroner must have possessed some means of pressuring, bribing or extorting Vargas into siphoning tens of billions of dollars from the cartel to WRAITH proper.

Despite the apparent dissolution of WRAITH in the second decade of the 21st century Lucien Vargas has remained at large. The drug baron has reportedly gone to extreme lengths to foil the authorities: he is extremely paranoid, and regularly undergoes plastic surgery to change not just his face but his fingerprints and even his voice; he is suspected of bribing hundreds of judges, law enforcement officials and politicians all across the Americas, and is said to have links to many international businesses operating in South America that protect him and his investments to one extent or another. Whatever the case, even though he has been in the FBI's top ten of most wanted men for over two decades Lucien Uriel Vargas remains at large even today. Likewise Los Tiburones continues to exist and operate from the jungles of central South America to the concrete wastelands of the US' greatest cities, killing hundreds every year despite the authorities' best attempts to root them out.

Off naked Chatham show,
We dare not meet him with our fleet -
